Trans soldiers and veterans respond to Trump banning them from serving in 'any capacity'

Logan Ireland is a transgender airman who has served in Afghanistan

Transgender people, both serving members of the armed forces and veterans, have responded to Trump banning them from serving in ‘any capacity’.

He has blamed the ‘medical costs and disruption’ they would cause to the armed forces.

Making the announcement on Twitter, he said:

‘Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.’

Around 12,000 transgender individuals currently serve in the US military. In addition, approximately 134,400 trans adults are military veterans or retirees. Thus, approximately 150,000 trans adults have served in the US Armed Forces or are currently on active duty.

The US Military is the largest employer of trans individuals in the country.

Chelsea Manning called out Trump’s cowardice, while Kristen Beck – first Navy Seal to come out as trans – challenged the US president to meet her.

‘I would like to see them try to kick me out of my military,’ Staff Sgt. Logan Ireland, an airman, told Air Force Times. ‘You are not going to deny me my right to serve my country when I am fully qualified and able and willing to give my life.’

The star of the documentary Transgender, At War and in Love, alongside his trans wife Cpl. Laila Villanueva, he said the policy change was a surprise.

‘For the president to deny an able-bodied, fully qualified person the inherent right to raise their right hand and serve their country, potentially giving their own life for our freedoms, is doing this country an injustice,’ Ireland said.

Other veterans also spoke out on Twitter.

14 amazing LGBTI women whose style we’d like to steal

1 Jess Glynne

Ain’t Got Fair To Go singer Jess is known for her fiery mass of red hair, her daring stage garb and her love of achingly cool eyewear. There’s of course a distinct 90s vibe to her ensembles – the bright green trouser suit and platform boots she wore to the 2016 Brit Awards could have been from 20 (or 40!) years before!

2 Sarah Paulson

Sarah’s red carpet looks are old Hollywood glamor epitomised. In the above shot from this year’s Met Gala, the American Horror Story star is wearing Prada.

3 Cara Delevingne

The Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets actress knows a thing or two about fashion having started out as a world-conquering supermodel. She looks equally amazing in structured tailoring as in glamorous ballgowns.

4 Kristen Stewart

Like Cara, Personal Shopper star Kristen opted for a bleached blonde buzzcut this year; Katy Perry soon followed suit. She can often be found rocking high couture and hoodies in the same day. We recently chatted to the gay stylist on her film Personal Shopper about Kristen’s style secrets – read the interview here.

5 Janet Mock

US writer and trans activist Janet is also a contributing editor for style bible Marie Clare. Her Instagram feed is one of statement earrings, carefree curls and formfitting dresses.

6 (and 7) Tegan and Sara

Pop singer sister duo Tegan and Sara were hipsters before the word ‘hipster’ was invented. The girls favor an androgynous style, and look effortlessly cool in blazers, leather jackets and t-shirts and skinny jeans.

8 Samira Wiley

Orange Is the New Black star Samira’s style is compellingly unpredictable. For the red carpet, it’s trouser suits or delicate dresses; when off-duty, it’s boyish backwards caps, loose-fitting shirts and t-shirts. But then, her flamboyant Christian Siriano wedding dress was the height of femme. We can’t wait to see what she’ll wear next.

9 Amber Heard

She looks like a Disney Princess, but Aquaman star Amber doesn’t tend to go for the over-embellished looks of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Her style is mostly characterised by clean lines and muted colors.

10 Ellen Paige

Since coming out in 2014 Juno actress Ellen Paige’s style has really evolved. She loves the odd collar and tie, but mostly her looks are pared-down and unfussy. She always looks comfortable, casual, and above all, confident.

11 Gigi Gorgeous

On the flip side we have model Gigi. Her explosively colourful wardrobe is the dressing up box dreams are made of. Skin-tight lycra, tassles, leather, lace, feather boas, thigh high boots, corsets – she wears it all while having an absolute ball. We want her life.

12 Raven-Symoné

Showbiz veteran Raven-Symoné also loves a pop of color, most notably in her hair, which has been everything from blue to yellow to blue. Deconstructing her style would take too long (she looks like a different person every time she leaves the house) but we’re living for this world flag shirt she wore on The View last year.

13 Evan Rachel Wood

Like Ellen Paige, Evan has worn her fair share of tuxedos to events, while looking better in them than any man who springs to mind. The self-identified tomboy also swears by a baggy tee and a loafer.

14 Caitlyn Jenner

Finally, Caitlyn… Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the reality star and former Olympian is one of the world’s most glamorous women, with a taste in clothes that leaves most of her extended family in the shade. Perhaps she owes it all to her stylist, but her look is a cross between Kate Middleton and Cindy Crawford – and it’s a winner.

LGBTI people are looking to India to find long-term love

LGBTI people are looking to India to find long-term love

loveislove_1432 | Instagram

LGBTI people from all over the world are looking to India to find love.

The International Gay Marriage Bureau is an Indian website which is the only one in the world looking to arrange marriages for LGBTI people.

Urvi Shah is the CEO of Custom Soul Connection LLP the parent company of International Gay Marriage Bureau.

She told Gay Iceland she had originally started the website for Indian people who faced a lot of discrimination because of their sexuality.

‘I was actually researching issues faced by homosexuals in India. India considers homosexuality a taboo and therefore it is not accepted,’ she said.

‘(Homosexual) People were going through problems like depression, anxiety, loneliness and other social problems too. So I became curious to know about their life partners and hence did a research on that too.

‘We do not work for heterosexuals. Initially we started the company only for homosexuals but since March 2017, we are also accepting registrations from trans people.’

Shah is very clear that the website is not a dating service, but rather a way for people to find long-term partner – and where legal – someone to marry. Users only pay the fee of about $562 after they’ve found Mr or Mrs Right.

‘On average it takes about 6 months to find a partner. Most of our clients are getting married after finding a life partner,’ she told Gay Iceland.

Even though Shah originally set up the website solely for the Indian market, their client base has gone global.

‘We have clients from 24 countries from various nationalities, 39 to be specific,’ she said.

‘Most of the inquiries are from India, the US, Canada, the UK, Dubai, Australia and New-Zealand.

‘Most of the inquiries come from the individuals themselves but we also get many inquiries from their friends, parents or other relatives.’

Indian government politician makes moves on trans rights, slams homophobia

Indian government politician makes moves on trans rights, slams homophobia

Ramesh Bais (centre) led a committee which found the Indian government’s bill on trans rights was lacking.

A report looking into a trans rights law in India found the government needs to do more for trans people.

Released by the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, the report found the government’s proposed transgender bill did not address basic civil rights needs.

The committee found the Bill is lacking in clear policies on adoption and, marriage and divorce. Without this clarity it could leave trans people open to criminalization under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. Section 377 bans ‘acts against the order of nature’.

The draft bill did not clearly define discrimination and did not include policy on how trans people could bring a complaint if they are mistreated or abused.

The report also found draft law failed to properly protect trans people from rape and sexual assault.

Another flag the panel raised with the bill was its definition of transgender people.

The draft bill describes them as ‘neither wholly female nor wholly male,’ ‘a combination of female or male,’ and ‘neither female nor male’. The report said those descriptions were ‘unscientific and primitive,’ and one which ‘completely misunderstands trans identities’ and severely restricts their right to self-identify.

The BJP led the criticism

Introduced to parliament last year the government’s Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) was reviewed by the 31-member committee.

It was headed by Ramesh Bais a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party.

‘A historic shift is underway, you are not alone in your struggle for the end of violence and discrimination,’ Bais wrote in the report’s introduction.

‘It is a shared struggle. Transgender is not an anomaly. It is a part of the spectrum of people’s realities.

‘While there is no shame in being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex or even straight – there is a most certainly shame and dishonor in being a homophobe, a transphobe and a bigot.’

Concerns were addressed

Human rights advocates welcomed the committees’s report saying it addressed concerns about the draft legislation.

‘This strong public acknowledgement of the LGBT community, long marginalized in India, introduces and sets the tone for a new report on transgender rights,’ wrote the Human Rights Watch (HRW) Asian division researcher, Jayshree Bajoria.

‘The Indian government should amend the transgender rights bill to ensure that transgender people can self-identify their legal gender without unwanted intervention from committees or experts, be they medical, psychological, or anyone else.

‘And this alone should form the basis for their access to all rights, social security measures, benefits, and entitlements.’

New photography exhibit reveals an intimate look at Sierra Leone’s LGBT community

Photo from The House of Kings and Queens exhibit, documenting Sierra Leone’s LGBT community.

Lee Price, a documentary photography based in Manchester, presents The House of King and Queens, a new photography exhibit as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s LGBT 50 programme. The exhibit opens July 27, the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967. It allows people to see inside the LGBT community of Freetown, Sierra Leone unlike ever before.

Sierra Leone is one of 77 countries in which it is still illegal to engage in homosexual acts. The law is rarely enforced, but that does not keep members of the community safe from harassment and violence.

Within the heart of Leone’s capital, Freetown, exists ‘The House of King and Queens’. Owned by a young transgender woman, members of the LGBT come to this place of comfort and safety.

The sanctuary of Sierra Leone

Commissioned by Hull, the sister city of Sierra Leone, Lee observed the project is ‘a reminder of the progress still to be made with regards to international gay rights’ but also ‘a celebration of the inspiring defiance of oppression and segregation amongst the gay community of Sierra Leone’.

The photos are, without a doubt, beautiful. They are also insightful, offering a look into a community and life of which many people may have little knowledge. It is moving to see a space where the inhabitants can comfortably be themselves.

‘Life is tough for gay people in Sierra Leone and especially those who are transgender,’ said a visitor of the house, who cannot be named for fear of persecution. ‘We face a lot of problems here; transgender people can be flogged in the streets and we don’t feel safe going out after dark in case we are attacked. When ebola came to Sierra Leone it was blamed on gay people. We suffer so much humiliation every day, but I am proud to be gay.’

Perhaps what is so striking about the photographs is that they do not reveal the whole story. They offer a glimpse.

When there is concern about the safety of lives, a level of secrecy is not only understandable but necessary. This look into such a space in the LGBT community is recognized for its significance and gravity.

A need for pride

As a member of this very community, Price’s work often involves groups within the LGBT world. His past projects include Sex with Strangers, documenting gay cruisers, and Against the Order of Nature, showcasing the LGBT community of Uganda.

‘We often hear the question “why does the LGBT community still need Pride,”‘ said Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017. ‘The answer is simple, it’s because there are parts of the world where people are still persecuted for being themselves. Lee Price’s strikingly beautiful, yet thought-provoking photographs show that hope can persevere, even in the face of adversity and I hope that in some small way, they will inspire people to be more supportive of each other closer to home.’

Minister for Women and Equalities Justine Greening further commented: ‘Pride is special, and it’s been fantastic being a part of the celebrations this year. I’m proud to see how far we’ve come as a country in the past 50 years, but there is still more to do. This exhibition is a reminder of the work we still have to do to stamp out bullying and hate crime, which can have such a damaging impact on LGBT people’s lives.’

To find out more about the exhibit and visit it, see its website here.

Straight singer Ben Adams calls his shirt ‘a tad gay’ and Twitter drags him

A1 boyband member, Ben Adams, called his t-shirt ‘a tad gay’ and Twitter isn’t having any of it.

While on his way to Northern Pride in the UK, he posted the photo to Twitter with the controversial caption: ‘Off to headline Northern Pride with A1 – just realised my t-shirt looks a tad gay… guess it’s the right gig for it.’

Then Twitter started dragging the straight singer to filth.

One viral tweet said: ‘Hey Ben Adams – Next time you accept money to perform at a Pride event… You should consider supporting the cause & your choice of words.’

Another said: ‘If you don’t know why this tweet was offensive, you probably shouldn’t perform at Pride events.’

And another tweeted: ‘How to both miss the point and also highlight how very needed a thing like still is.’

Then Adams began blocking people. Numerous accounts posted screenshots of Adams having blocked them for calling him out.

He decided to delete the original tweet and replace it with ‘great’ instead of ‘gay’. He also included a laugh-crying emoji, which some have criticized for not taking his correction seriously.

Northern Pride reacts to the Ben Adams controversy

But now Northern Pride organizers stepped in to comment on the issue this morning (26 July).

Chairman Mark Nichols said: ‘We have had a lengthy conversation with A1 and we fully accept that there was absolutely no intention to cause offence to anyone.

‘It does however flag up that people need to be careful about the language they use, even in a throw away comment, particularly on social media.

‘The Pride committee now intend to put an end to this matter and concentrate on all the fantastic, positive support that this year’s event generated.’

Band member and also featured in the photo, Adam Read, took to Twitter to apologize. He said: ‘As soon as he realized it caused some offence, he took it down.

‘We fully embrace and support all diversity whilst also appreciating the freedom of expression.

‘It’s obvious to anyone who knows our history as a band, that we’ve always fully supported the LGBT community. From when we started out in 1998, we had our first meaningful break on the gay scene, which we’ve always been very grateful for,’ he said.

This new dating site caters specifically to LGBTI Jews

This new dating site caters specifically to LGBTI Jews

This new dating site caters specifically to LGBTI Jews.

Between Grindr, Adam4Adam, Scruff, and the myriad of other dating sites and apps catering to gay men, it might seem like that market is inundated. However, LGBTI Jews are an underrepresented community, which is where the new dating site Saw You At Stonewall comes in.

Playing off the name of the popular Jewish dating service Saw You At Sinai, Saw You At Stonewall, currently in its beta period, is a matchmaking service specifically for Jewish people who identify as LGBTI.

How it works

The site uses an algorithm to group users into categories such as age and location. Users then identify their gender and their sexuality/romantic attraction to other genders on a sliding scale. They can answer questions about themselves to give more details about what they’re looking for in a partner – these answers remain completely anonymous. Then, the best part: actual humans do the matchmaking from there.

Unlike Grindr and its contemporaries which tend to serve people looking for hook ups, Saw You At Stonewall is for people looking for a more serious romantic relationship. Users get one match at a time. They’re given a short blurb about their match as well as contact information, and then it’s up to the two users to take it from there. If that match doesn’t work out, a new potential match will be assigned within a month.

What’s revolutionary about Saw You At Stonewall is that there are no public profiles like typical dating websites. Instead, all the information remains anonymous, only to be viewed by the volunteer matchmakers.

‘There’s tons of dating sites but there’s nothing specific to being Jewish and queer,’ Joanna Halpern, a Jewish lesbian, told Jewish Week. ‘That’s what’s beautiful about this website. Unlike other dating apps, it has all the perfect questions for being Jewish and all the specific questions for being queer that other websites would be lacking.’

Though Saw You At Stonewall’s trial period is now full, the site will hopefully be open to new users again soon.

GSN has reached out to the creators of Saw You At Stonewall for comment.

Lupita N’yongo is the Dormouse, albino lawyer and model Thando Hopa plays the Princess of Hearts, while Australian supermodel Duckie Thot is Alice.

The pictures were taken by Tim Walker, and styled by Edward Enninful – the gay black editor of British Vogue.

‘Inclusivity is more part of the conversation than it has ever been before, but it goes far beyond black and white,’ Enninful said, according to the New York Times.

‘It is about all creeds, all colors, all sizes and people just living their truths. A lot of this is about digital giving people voices, and a new generation who refuse to compromise and want answers to the questions that matter to them.

‘Given the state of the world we live in, sometimes I think we all feel like we’ve fallen down the rabbit hole.

‘For me, a retelling of Alice for the modern world was a perfect project, particularly once the cast fell into place.’

The Pirelli calendar, first published by the Italian tire company of the same name in 1964, used to be a soft-core ode to scantily clad women.

Never sold on the open market, it is a collector’s item sent to celebrities, clients and chief executives.

Caitlyn Jenner with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel

Caitlyn Jenner was fodder for lots jokes while she was transitioning. Many standup comics used her appearance to get a laugh in the years before she came out as transgender.

On Tuesday night, late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel apologized for the jokes he made. However, that apology only came after some prodding from Jenner.

Appearing on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live talk show, Jenner slyly confronted Kimmel about making her a punchline.

‘Kris and I, we had gone our separate directions, not because of gender issues but because of other things,’ Jenner told Kimmel.

‘And there I was back in Malibu all by myself, and so I slowly went through, told all my children, because it had been just hammered all over the media for the longest time,’ she continued.

Then Jenner got to her point, saying, ‘In fact, guys like you, making, hmm, some jokes.’

Kimmel quickly replied, ‘We didn’t know what was happening, we thought you were just vain.’

The host paused a moment, then added, ‘We didn’t know what was going on. Sorry about that, by the way.’

‘It’s quite alright,’ Jenner initially said.

Then she turned to the audience and teased, ‘Now he’s going to apologize.’

Turning back to Kimmel, Jenner said, ‘But I accept your apology.’

Kimmel referenced fellow late night host Jimmy Fallon as someone who had made especially cruel jokes about Jenner’s appearance.

She acknowledged that, but complimented Kimmel, saying, ‘You’ve always been my favorite, that’s why I thought I would do this.’
